General Roof Woes (lots)
« on: November 03, 2019, 11:51:40 PM »
I was given my 306 cab by my dad in a swap
Yellow; low mileage; very tidy; roof worked perfectly
That was until my first attempt to open it
It snagged on the bin lid and switched off

I found a reset procedure online (not here)
but it did not work
so i did it manually for a while until i figured it out

Then I broke the bolt on the manual lid closer

I contacted a garage in Guildford who profess to fix these cars
But was put off at first by the £170 just to diagnose it
Folks here may know this garage

Whilst I was mulling that over
The switch that operates the rear windows and roof did something odd
The nearside rear window switch stopped working
And instead the roof switch, that was previously doing nothing now took over the role of opening the window

Then I noticed that the rear quarters of the interior of the roof were both flapping away inside the car
With bits hanging out
When I inspected it I found that flat piece that gives the rear quarter its structure and holds it in place had snapped
This was the case on both sides
And may be, I suspect, a result of opening the roof manually.

And then
After a serious pounding of rain the whole back seat exploded in mould
I checked the roof and noticed two splits right on the seam above the rear window
I came on here and did some reading
And was left thinking the game may be up
Like I have seen mentioned on here
The upper rim of the rear window has lifted up away from the window
And has left the zipper bearing its teeth
This may be what causes the roof to sag when it is wet
When I have tried to press on the rim with the hopeless idea that it might press back
You can feel it start to rip more of the seam
Which appears to be weak

I would happily switch to hard top if I could find one
As I have another old convertible anyway

Look for a replacement roof at breakers yards in your area or on e-bay. A roof swap is not a difficult job, there is a really good guide on here somewhere.
I'm all better now!

Thanks Dave

I have found a couple already
What kind of price does a whole roof usually command from a scrapper?

An upholsterer is going to seal the hole problem for me
So not in a rush to buy a roof

people are asking silly money for roofs & hardtops on ebay lately you're better of looking in scrappys or gumtree
Beer, it's the reason I get up every afternoon.
