Looking for Series 2 automatic gear selector lever.
« on: November 18, 2020, 07:38:21 PM »
No great rush, but I am looking for automatic gear selector lever/mechanism for a series 2 cabriolet. Mine works fine but the plastic handle cover now has old age cracks.

Hi Derrick,
I too would like a shift knob for series 2 AL4 automatic. The Australian climate is quite hard on the interior plastics of most European vehicles. It is said that a 406 knob fits, yes it does but it has as far as I know, a chrome highlight added. I am sure that there is a good market for the 306 shift knobs, if someone had suitable tooling.
Cheers from Oz,
Tony

Me also  ;)
It doesn't matter where you put it, cos someone else will come along and move it, and it's always been the same, it's just a complicated game...

hey guys

problem with them is once you have attached the knob they are almost impossible to remove without splitting them in half. There is a spring inside them that clicks into place over the shaft and the only way i know to remove one is to twist it which destroys the insides and makes it almost impossible to refit .

see these imgur

you can see in the pic where it is split in half the spring that engages the shaft.
they also normally come with a collar around the bottom which is destroyed during removal.

so all in all crappy design. I have 2 in halves if you need them. The original finish was a faux leather that wore away after time. I have used black vinyl spray cans on them and they dont look too bad.

Pete

Still no joy in finding the elusive automatic gear selector lever/mechanism for my series 2 cabriolet. It is rumoured that the great treasure to be found by the Boys on The Grand Tour of  Madagascar is the the said gear lever?
